“What all of us thought was a large whale was a three-hundred foot long underwater ship”. This quote is taken from chapter 2 of Jules Verne’s “Twenty thousand leagues under the sea” (first published in 1870).
The ship of  Captain  Nemo could take a plunge into a great amount of  kilometers of depth. Also, it could reach around fifty nautical knots per hour. This feature gave a great opportunity to study the sea bottom and fight with enemies really effectively.

Fortunately, science evolves a lot and up to date underwater ship stay relevant. Jules Verne even could not imagine what future generation would create. For instance, such inventions as a nuclear engine and ability to be underwater almost several months.
