I do not know whether or not I have succeeded to do and express in my works that which I wished – love of life, joy, and vitality, devotion to all that Russia means to us – these have always been the sole subject of my pictures. BORIS KUSTODIEV
This book is an appraisal of the life and work of Boris Kustodiev, a talented and original Russian artist. Kustodiev’s life-span encompassed the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (1878 – 1927), a circumstance that to a large extent determined the character of his art. A pupil of Repin, Kustodiev embraced the best traditions of Russian realist painting and after the October Revolution of 1917 became one of the founders of Soviet art.
The artist’s interests ranged far and wide. He was not only a painter, but engaged in sculpture, book illustration, and stage-set and costume design as well.
The volume includes a detailed catalogue and provides information pertaining to all previous publications and exhibitions of the works reproduced.
